Minter Creek
« on: December 03, 2011, 01:50:56 PM »
I just came back from Minter Creek.  It is combat fishing but lots of fun.  I hooked, snagged, flossed some where between 30 to 35 fish.  Great place to have some fun.  But it is true combat fishing so go over with that attitude and you will be fine.  I still had a blast!!!

Just got back from there myself.  We were up close to the hatchery.  Lots of fun, but I lost 6 hooks today and only managed to pull one fish out of the water.  But I am a new guy and that was only my second try at salmon fishing.
There's a reason they call it hunting, not killing.

Minter Creek is not salmon fishing, don't fool yourself.

Caught 4 bright ones and smoked them up.  It is quite entertaining to see the different gear and tactics.  One guy had a freaken tuna trolling rod and reel and had his Penn Senator real spooled up with 100 lb braided line.  When he snagged up he was able to pull stumps out of the creed vs breaking off.  The guy next to me was snagging using only a bare 4 00 hook.  He got hooked up once and made like a pushing motion to get me out the way.  He said "I got a bite everybody back!". (seriously! WTF!)   I like they have signs posted there in English and Russian.

I got a question. Not to threadjack but whats with the beef against braid? I like floating and braided is easier for me for my setup but if the drifters beat me to the bobber hole I'm sol. I use a mono leader but guys wanna gut me because they say they'll get snagged if I break off. How is the 30 lb braid gonna break before 20 lb mono?! I do understand my line will slice there's if we cross but I actually learned the etiquette so odds of that are sliiiiim.

? Not sure what you mean beef with braid.  What I meant was he was using gear that was unconventional when fishing  a stream that is less than 4 feet deep for 8-10 lb chum salmon.  I never tried braid but my friend swears by it.  It's spendy and if you use too high a pound test it can be difficult to break off if you get snagged up.    Because it is much smaller in diameter and more supple some guys are more willing to use higher pound test.  30 lb braid and 30 lb mono are a lot different to cast that is for sure.

Braid is the shi+. I only have mono on a rod I drift fish with and throw spinners with, but I don't do either of those very often anymore. 40 or 50lb power pro is what I use 95% of the time.

It isn't a beef with braid, it is a beef with someone going to a river set up so well to snag that even if they tail hook a fish that will be able to horse it in.  That is not fishing.

A little off topic but if WDFW is going to cut funding for enforcement then WSP and county sheriffs need to be able to enforce game violations
"I think I have a fish"
"probably bottom"
